Troubleshoot Your Garage Door

Common Garage Door Problems

Please Note: Doing garage door repairs yourself can be dangerous, Please leave it to the professionals.

Garage Door Having Trouble Going Up.....

  • First thing to do is check the garage door spring. With the garage door down, look up above at the center of your garage door to see if there is a spring broke. If the garage door spring is broke STOP USING THE GARAGE DOOR AND HAVE YOUR SPRING CHANGED BY A PROFESSIONAL. Changing a broken spring yourself can be dangerous. Broken springs will not let the garage door fully open or it will open 6 inches to halfway up then immediately back down.

  • Pull the emergency release on the garage door opener and see if you can lift the garage door with one hand. If the door is heavy, then your springs may be old and have relaxed. Your spring/springs need to be replaced or your garage door needs to be balanced.

  •  The garage door is not heavy when you pull the emergency release. Try running the garage door opener without the door attached and see if your garage door opener is not making a funny noise and is running correctly.

  • Check to see if the safety eyes are lined up correctly

  • If  just green lights are off or green lights are blinking,  adjust the safety eyes until the green lights are on and solid.

  • If both photo eyes are off, the problem could be with the wiring or the garage door opener itself.

  • May need to adjust the down force on the garage door opener

  • Check the drums and cables on the garage door to make sure the cables have not unspooled off the drums.

  • First off, check and see if the batteries are good.

  • Go to the back of the garage door opener and see if there is a blinking light. If there is you could possibly have board troubles or the remotes need to be reset.
